Important thing to know

After the 2018 earthquake, Mount Rinjani was temporarily closed due to landslides. Thankfully, the government and Rinjani Park management have since restored the trails, and today the routes are safe and open for trekking—though some paths are steeper than before.

Planning to hike Mount Rinjani this year? Here are three recommended trekking routes you can choose from, each offering a unique blend of challenge, scenery, and experience:

🏞️ 1. Sembalun Route – The Classic Crater Rim Experience

Starting from Sembalun Village (1,100 m), this route takes you through open savannahs with breathtaking views on clear days. The journey continues to Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m) with several rest posts along the way:

  • Pos 1 (1,300 m)

  • Pos 2 Tengengean (1,500 m)

  • Pos 3 Pada Balong (1,800 m)

  • Pos 4 (2,100 m)

  • Pelawangan Sembalun / Crater Rim Camp (2,639 m)

Before reaching the crater rim, trekkers must conquer the challenging “Regret Hill”, with a steep 60-degree incline. The descent typically follows the Senaru route, offering stunning views of Lake Segara Anak, Mount Baru Jari, and Mount Rinjani’s summit from the Senaru Crater Rim, known as one of the best sunset spots on the mountain.

🌿 2. Senaru Route – Rainforest to Crater Rim

This is the most popular route, ideal for those aiming to reach the crater rim only. Starting from Senaru Village (600 m), the trail takes around 6 hours to reach the campsite at 2,600 m.

  • Walk through dense tropical rainforest where you may spot shy black monkeys and cheeky macaques.

  • Trail landmarks include POS II (1,500 m) and POS III (2,000 m) before reaching the steep gravel path to the rim.

The final climb includes a 45-degree incline with no clear trail, often requiring patience and persistence. For those continuing, a steep descent of 600+ meters leads to the crater lake and hot springs, with handrails and ropes assisting along the way. The return trip follows the same path, though downhill can be slippery and tiring—especially from POS Extra to POS 3.

📌 Tip: While continuing to the summit is possible from Senaru via Plawangan II, it’s more practical to start summit attempts from Sembalun.

💧 3. Torean Route – Scenic Trek to the Lake

Newly favored after the earthquake, the Torean Route offers a less steep but longer path—ideal for those who want to reach the lake on the same day.

  • Start from Torean Village (585 m) in the early morning.

  • Trek for 9–10 hours to reach the camp area by the lake (2,000 m).

Trail Highlights:

  • Entrance (779 m)

  • POS 1 (821 m)

  • POS 2 Birisan Nangka (1,078 m)

  • Penimbungan Waterfall (1,299 m) – a scenic and popular photo spot

  • POS 3 (1,355 m)

  • Pelawangan Torean (1,585 m)

  • Propok break point before heading uphill and downhill to Lake Camp

The Torean trail winds through rainforest, river crossings, and cliffside paths with dramatic views—making it one of the most scenic routes in Rinjani.
